A legendary estate where more than a century of elegance, artistry, and celebration awaits your story.
Set back nearly 1,000 feet from the road and approached over a winding bluestone drive lined with towering maples, Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury is a place where grandeur and history are woven into every detail. What began in 1910 as Dr. Ernest Fahnestock's Georgian country estate has become one of New Jersey's most distinguished settings for unforgettable celebrations.
Designed by architects Lewis Colt Albro and Harrie T. Lindeberg, the 25-room mansion was built at a cost of more than $200,000 — a testament to the artistry that still defines the property today.
From formal English gardens and a 100-foot rose garden to beamed ceilings and hand-carved details rescued from the world's great hotels, every corner of Shadowbrook tells a story.
Over the decades, Shadowbrook evolved into a celebrated destination for fine dining and elegant celebration. The Oak Room — with its beamed ceiling, paneled walls, and sweeping windows overlooking the gardens — remains its beating heart, home to a pergola and miniature lake that have witnessed countless first dances.
The showpiece foyer boasts a honeycombed wood ceiling brought back from an English castle, restored 11.5-foot antique doors, and a golden 32-light chandelier rescued from New York's Biltmore Hotel.
Dr. Ernest Fahnestock purchases the 115-acre Stillwell farm and names it Shadow Brook Farm, transforming a working crop farm into a Georgian country estate.
Construction of the 25-room Colonial Revival mansion is completed, surrounded by formal English gardens, a fountain, and a 100-foot rose garden.
Fred Thorngreen opens the estate as a restaurant, hotel, and night club — the beginning of its life as a place of celebration.
The venue earns a stellar reputation for elegant atmosphere and gourmet cuisine, with the Oak Room expanded and a Bride's Room designed for wedding parties.
Major renovations bring the honeycombed English ceiling, Villard House wood panels, the Horseshoe Bar, and the Biltmore chandelier to the estate.
